The story of the game is well developed and the antagonists are a mix of the good and evil. So it’s a good idea to always check the antagonist’s background before you decide if you’re going to confront them or not. Some are too similar to your characters, especially the good characters who forgo a bad attitude in their names. But who cares? Maybe they’re a good guy, maybe they are strong and good!
The battle system is pretty standard, I suppose, though the skills that you gain from leveling up really vary the combat so it’s fun playing the game. When you start the game, it’s easy to beat the Elite monster but after the third boss, the guy who is collecting your heart will be much harder to beat. You’ll get a LOT of materia as you progress and the number of skills you get from leveling up are pretty good, but not unique, so you can’t use any materia on skills that you want to boost and maybe you’ll just use them just to look cool.
The battles aren’t that simple, but are fun. When you deal a lot of damage on the monster, you deal a lot of damage on yourself as well, so you’ll need to learn how to do more damage and how to heal yourself.
The customization of your character is pretty fun, you can equip any weapons you find around, change the color of your armor, pick your magic, and all that. You can even choose what kind of leather you want your armor to be made of. There are limits, however, because the more you customize, the more heavy your character will get and the stronger the enemies will be to compensate. It’s a bit of a balance with the shield/dagger/sword business.
Also, there are skills that you can learn and some that you can’t, so you need to equip the right weapons for the kind of combat you want to do.
The game’s exploration is diverse, so you’ll have a lot of things to do. The dungeons are pretty fun, with all the traps and monsters to find. In some cases you can use the traps to your advantage, you can be an adult-sized cat and jump over the ceiling and get on the flying dragon that’s coming down, and you can put the enemies to sleep by shaking the trees that surround you. The exploration is pretty fun and easy enough for anyone to play.
