1. **Access the File menu.**
2. **Choose Open or Open Recent, and navigate to a photograph.**

You see an image thumbnail, as shown in Figure 12-1.

3. **Click Open to launch the Photoshop Editor.**

You see the image opened to the left of your screen.

If you haven’t opened the image you want to work with yet, you see your own images and folders.

When you open the software for the first time, you’re given a basic tutorial of the features and functions.

4. **In the Tools panel at the bottom of your screen, click the Photoshop menu and choose Edit, then Preferences.**

The Open dialog box appears with a list of recent documents displayed at the top, with the names of your most recently opened images displayed below it. The Photoshop menu is also displayed at the top of the editor window.

5. **Choose Preferences from the Photoshop menu.**

The Photoshop preferences dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 12-2.

6. **On the left side of the dialog box, click the first option in the File Handling section and choose a folder where you want to save files and images.**

This step establishes your default Save location for the folders you create.

7. **Next, open the Workflow section.**

The Workflow dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 12-3.

You can then select the custom workflow for your workflow and retain the defaults.

The first section, Preferred Files, is used to specify a location in the external hard drive or folder where a new image will be stored. If you have many images on your hard drive, this folder can take up a lot of space, so you might want to change the location.

The second section, Sequence Order, governs the order in which your images are saved in the _sequence_ — the name given to the folder of images, as explained next.

8. **Click the first option in the Preferred Files section and navigate to the folder that you want to use as your default Save location.**

You can change the default location under Save Locations.

Now that you know why people use Photoshop, let’s examine some of the features that can help you get the best results.

Color Correction

Color correction is the process of modifying the color balance and contrast of images in order to achieve the desired look. There are many steps that a Photoshop user goes through in order to achieve this.

Adjustment Layers

Adjustment Layers can help you fix various problems in your images such as correcting shadows, highlights, color and contrast. Adjustment Layers are also useful if you want to crop an image to a specific area or redraw an element. They can also help you adjust the brightness and the contrast of the image.

Layers

Layers helps you easily manipulate the content of your image by layer a new object on your photo. You can move, resize, and flip layers to create more complex edits. You can also easily hide and show layers by clicking their icon that sits on the Layer panel. You can also duplicate your image and hide or show duplicate layers. Layers also keep the original photo for easy rotation and editing in a nested form.

Adjustment Brush

The Adjustment Brush is an extremely useful tool to adjust the brightness, contrast, and color of an image.

Curves

Curves is a tool that helps you adjust the contrast and color of a photo. Curves is fairly easy to use and you can use it to make subtle changes to the image’s contrast. The good thing about the Curves tool is that you can use it to edit and adjust images in a semi-automatic manner.

Vectors

Vectors are mostly used to make simple drawings or create custom shapes. Vectors can also be used to create custom text and make them look more professional. Vectors can also be used to resize and arrange objects on your image.

Filters

Filters help you achieve a specific look. By changing the way the photo is treated, you can change its mood. Filters are extremely useful for adding a background, changing the color of the object, enhancing color, adding a vignette, adding reflections, making the image transparent,

A little over a week ago, I wrote about “Passports, Paperwork, and the Cost of Travel,” where I illustrated how the different paperwork a country might impose on you at the border, when you come from one country and go to another, can cost hundreds of dollars. This week, I have a new story about the cost of travel.

In the last two weeks, I’ve traveled a great deal. I’ve gone to Greece, Canada, Asia and now returning to the U.S. I’ve been returning each time by plane, for a number of reasons.

It’s convenient. I like the idea of just showing up at the airport for my return flight, after being away for a while. I enjoy keeping things simple. And, it’s also relatively safe. You have more time to adjust to being home from time away, and the plane is always less chaotic and stressful when I’m returning home from a trip versus when I’m traveling for the first time.

I’ve had to fill out a lot of documents when I have returned home, and I want to share some of the easier ones with you. These documents can include boarding passes, customs forms, immigration forms, hotel receipts, rental car receipts, etc.

In this week’s post, I’ll discuss the less-obvious and more-expensive ways that an airline might charge you a fee when you return home from a trip, and the documents they may request.

Tip #1: Know what a carrier might ask you to fill out at the airport.

From time to time, I’ve had my boarding pass printed on the same paper as the airline’s “Terms and Conditions” and “Privacy Policy.” While it’s a nice touch, it can present a bit of a snag.

The boarding pass includes specifics about your flight and the fee charged for your ticket, as well as other travel information.

Here’s the problem. Sometimes, my boarding pass will have one of the two policies spelled out on the back of the boarding pass. I should have an agent scan the back of the boarding pass for me, but this can be time-consuming and confusing.

It’s also important to note that your boarding pass may be provided by a third-party vendor (like a travel agent or a credit card company) who only provides tickets as a service to your airline. This tool might help you, it is called git-archive. As the manual states, this is not a backup tool but a more convenient way to export a series of commits from a local git repository to a tar archive.
Example of use:
git archive master –format=tar > my_repo.tar

This should work. Suppose you have a repo at github.com//.git which you can checkout with git clone . It will download to your ~/repos/ directory, and will have a commit hash for the latest commit. So you can run
git archive -o -s

which will make an archive to ~/repos/ of the contents of the , but without actually fetching all the commits.

Hulu is shutting down the service’s Tubi video on-demand platform, leaving Netflix the only video streaming service on which customers can rent movies on an ongoing basis.

The announcement came in a statement to USA TODAY following a widespread report by The Wall Street Journal. A Hulu representative confirmed to USA TODAY it’s closing down the on-demand service.

Hulu launched Tubi in September. In a blog post announcing the service at the time, Hulu said Tubi offered movies from Disney, Fox, Paramount and Warner Bros.

After the service was launched, it quickly became one of the most downloaded apps on the Android and iOS operating systems, according to comScore, a market research company. It also featured a recommendation engine that would suggest new movie rentals based on the ones watched the previous week.

“Hulu Tubi is a great movie discovery platform, but the service was born too early and never quite caught on,” Joel Berg, a Hulu spokesperson, told USA TODAY. “After a lot of iteration, we’re shutting it down.”

Tubi was the only service available on the mobile and tablet platforms offered by Hulu. Customers could rent movies for $3.99 to $9.99 a month.
