AutoCAD, available as both a standard desktop edition and a mobile app, is the leading solution for creating 2D and 3D drawings. The free trial version of AutoCAD is available in limited areas.

The AutoCAD 14 and AutoCAD LT 14 editions are available for 64-bit and 32-bit Windows systems, respectively. AutoCAD LT is available only as a 32-bit Windows system. Both editions can work on Mac OS. AutoCAD LT has fewer features than AutoCAD, but is a lot cheaper. AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT use a native Windows file format, whereas the mobile app version uses a mobile-optimized file format, with the ability to save work to a cloud-based storage solution such as OneDrive. AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT offer a 100-sheet paper limit.

As of May 2018, AutoCAD has over 6.5 million active users.

How AutoCAD is used

Since its introduction, AutoCAD has been widely adopted by mechanical designers for engineering and architectural designs. Architectural designers are among the primary users of AutoCAD. Its other main user groups are architects, engineers, landscapers, and construction designers. A wide range of commercial, industrial, and architectural products are designed using AutoCAD. AutoCAD is also used for other purposes, including manufacturing, building construction, surveying, landscaping, and graphic arts.

Manufacturing

Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing manufacturers often use AutoCAD for part design. Mechanical parts are often manufactured using either CNC machines or industrial robots.

Air-conditioning and heating systems are manufactured using a combination of parts and components. These components include air ducts, duct liners, trays, registers, grills, plenums, temperature sensors, fans, filters, coils, pipes, controls, and other components.

Windows SDK (Windows Development Kit) is the set of tools for creating and testing add-in modules.
Autodesk Artline is an ASCII text file format, more commonly known as.ART and.ARTZ. It is used to store AutoCAD parameters, and is also supported by older AutoCAD versions.
AutoCAD supports the AutoText and AutoTXT format used for textual parameter storage.
If a shape is moved to the bottom of a layer or if its extent is set to ‘zero’, it disappears from the drawing.

The customization system allows users to define their own templates for drawing objects. In Autodesk Architectural Desktop the customization interface is in the “User interface” tab of the “Preferences” dialog.

RAD Studio

Autodesk RAD Studio is an integrated development environment that works with the latest version of the Windows operating system (Windows XP or Windows Vista). It is a cross-platform development tool based on Microsoft Visual C++.

There are two versions of the RAD Studio suite, named RAD Studio C++ and RAD Studio C#. RAD Studio C++ is for creating applications in C++, while RAD Studio C# is for creating applications in.NET and Java. Both are installed together with AutoCAD LT and all the necessary tools for creating applications.

RAD Studio C++ allows users to create 2D, 3D, and cross-platform applications in the.NET Framework and C++. It contains a full integrated development environment, and the software can be used from within AutoCAD LT as a stand-alone application. The RAD Studio C++ does not require a license for AutoCAD LT. With the new Content Block Manager, intelligent content block naming will automatically create new content blocks for new content or improvements to existing content. You can also hide unwanted blocks. (video: 1:50 min.)
